From The Desk Of
August, 2009 Dear Parent(s) and Students: Welcome to the 2009-2010 school year! I am planning and anticipating a year filled with challenges, learning, and excitement. The following outline will supply you with information concerning our classroom. Thank you. RULES OF CONDUCT 1. No interfering with the teaching and learning of others. 2. Respect personal space, rights and property of others. 3. Follow directions of all your teachers. 4. Come to class prepared with all supplies and homework complete. THE DOG HOUSE When a behavior problem arises the student will put their name in the Dog House, this is a warning that their behavior is unacceptable. A second problem, results in a check after their name. Consequences may include seat detention, loss of privileges for a one day. A third problem will result in a call to a parent at work or home. Consequences may be for a period of one week. HOMEWORK & GRADES Students can expect approximately 45-60 minutes of homework daily in order to keep their grades up. I do have a daily planned Personal Learning Time, if this time is utilized to its fullest potential, homework will be greatly reduced. New homework is not assigned every day. However, your student most likely will have mathematics and/or language arts assignments to work on every night. Spelling words are assigned on Monday and a post test given at the end of the week. Long-term projects will be introduced and worked on in class and at home. Due dates will be fair and strictly enforced. I will accept late work within reason. Excused absences will allow for extended deadlines. A general rule regarding due dates is that all assignments are due the following day. Assignments may be resubmitted once to earn a higher grade. All general assignments with a score of less than 70% come with the expectation that they be corrected and resubmitted. Current grades are posted on line for student and parent viewing .Thus, students are able to inform you of their current status throughout the school year and you can view current grades through the internet. Progress notices through the first trimester will be sent home each Friday. Please monitor these notices and if you have concerns about anything, e-mail me, write me a note or call me at 506-7015. Classroom grades/scores are as follows: 1= 100-93, 2= 92-85, 3= 84-70, 4=69 or less. CLASS WEBSITE: www.ClassHomework.com/hurt There is also a direct link via the Universityschools.com site, click on students and then classroom links. The classroom website is intended to give parents and students a way to view schedules, upcoming activities and a place to download assignments that need to be completed or resubmitted. Not all assignments will be available on the website. I will do my best to provide additional copies in the classroom. The website homework section is not intended to be a crutch for no-name and/or missing assignments. To access the homework assignments the password will be: albert (as in Albert Einstein.) HOME READING PROGRAM Each student needs to have their own home reading book(s). I expect students to read at least 80 minutes a week on their own, outside of the classroom. Parents need to monitor this time and send written confirmation that this reading is being completed on the first day of each week. I will send forms home to use for this purpose (also available on line.) Success in this area correlates significantly with good grades. Please take this program seriously and strictly monitor their reading. SUPPLIES RECOMMENDED FOR THE CLASSROOM A complete list was provided at registration. If you need another list please let me know. If buying supplies causes any financial hardship, please write me a note. FIELD TRIPS • We have a number of field trips planned during the school year. A tentative list includes. September: An overnight, two day trip to Rocky Mountain National Park/Estes Park. October: A trip to the Pawnee National Grasslands/Pawnee Buttes. April: A trip to the Oregon Trail and Old Fort Laramie in Wyoming. May: A week long trip with the destination to be named later. We will be in need of parent volunteers. Here’s how you can help. First, we need parent chaperones to travel with us. Second, and very importantly we will be in need of parents willing and able to drive and transport a few students on each trip. If you are willing to drive, you need to give a copy of your DMV record and a copy of your driver’s license to Karaleigh Koonce in the Main Office. • Field Trips Eligibility: A student who has have two or more missing assignments at the close of school, the day preceding a trip will not be allowed to participate. Arrangements will be made for that student to visit another classroom. PHILOSOPHY I want students to have a successful Fifth Grade year and develop the skills needed to be successful in middle school. I expect students to become productive and self-directed. I would like to see an academically strong and enjoyable year for all students. Through student, parent, and teacher involvement, all students should succeed. Again, welcome to the classroom. Here's to a great year! Sincerely, Don Hurt hurthunter@msn.com (S) 304-0530 (H) 506-7015 www.ClassHomework.com/hurt I have read the back-to-school letter.
